Home Remedies for Interstitial Cystitis

Interstitial cystitis is a painful condition that is characterized by frequent urination. The frequency could be even up to once every ten minutes. This means that a person could be urinating up to 60 times a day, with frequent urination in the nights.


Symptoms of Interstitial Cystitis

Interstitial cystitis is often accompanied by disurea, which means difficulty and pain in passing urine. Some people may also experience pain in the pelvis and bladder. In many cases, a certain drink or food worsens the condition, and it often pain increases with the increase of urine collection in the bladder. Another symptom of interstitial cystitis is nocturia, which means frequent urination in the night. This is especially seen in older people. There could also be present pelvic floor dysfunction, causing delay and difficulty in starting urination. There may also be difficulty during sexual intercourse and also while sitting, especially during driving and working. It is seen that the condition of patients with interstitial cystitis is as bad as patients with renal failure in the last stages. In the case of women, the pain may get more severe during menstruation or during vaginal intercourse. In some cases, there may be scarring or stiffening of the bladder, which again causes bleeding.

Causes of Interstitial Cystitis

The causes of interstitial cystitis are not known. In some cases, people with interstitial cystitis may have a smaller bladder that cannot hold much urine, but in most cases, the bladder size does not have any thing to do with the condition.

Since Interstitial cystitis is a condition that is difficult or confusing to diagnose, it is usually seen that the doctor comes to the conclusion that a patient is suffering from this condition when occurrence of all other suspected diseases is ruled out. Some diseases with symptoms similar to interstitial cystitis are as follows.

Over-active bladder syndrome, which is a urological condition wherein a person urinates more than eight times a day.

Urithritis, which is the inflammation of the urethra.

Urethral syndrome, which is a lower urinary tract infection.

Trigonitis, which is an inflammation of the trigone region of the bladder.

Chronic prostatitis, which is a painful pelvic condition in men.



Home Remedies for Interstitial Cystitis

Sitting in a bathtub filled with warm water helps to ease the pain and provides comfort. You can also mix bathing salts in the water; however, it is best to consult your doctor. Cold compress of the region stomach region also helps. It eases the congestion in the bladder and provides relief.


Diet for Interstitial Cystitis

The benefits of cucumber are many for bladder infections. Mix a teaspoon of honey and one teaspoon of fresh lime juice with a cup of cucumber juice, and drink this up to three times a day. Cranberry juice, or cranberries in any form such as pills or supplements, is extremely useful in flushing out the bacteria from the bladder. One cup of radish leaf juice will also help. Drink everyday for 2 weeks. Fresh spinach juice with tender coconut water is also a good remedy.

Owing to its range in severity and symptoms, researchers have begun to consider interstitial cystitis, not as a single disease, but rather a group of diseases. Hence, it is best to consult your doctor for various options regarding alleviation of the condition.
